What is the California Citizen Corps?
California Citizen Corps is part of a national movement to help make our communities, state and nation safer, stronger, and better prepared for all hazards and threats. We all have a role in hometown security and California's Citizen Corps programs provide local community opportunities for everyone to prepare, train, and volunteer.

What is Hometown Security and what can citizens do to help?
Hometown security means taking an active role in helping to make our families and community safer and better prepared. We all have the ability and the responsibility to be more aware of the threats we face, to prepare for all hazards, learn the skills needed to help others in time of crisis, and to support our local emergency responders.

What kind of volunteer activities does California's Citizen Corps Program provide?
California's Citizen Corps Program offers volunteer opportunities to support local fire, law enforcement, emergency medical, public health, and emergency management agencies as well as disaster relief organizations such as the American Red Cross. Specific programs include Community Emergency Response Team, Fire Corps, Medical Reserve Corps, Neighborhood Watch, and Volunteers in Police Service. Local Citizen Corps Councils also develop other volunteer projects to meet specific community needs and hazards.
From helping with community outreach, education and training to on-site administrative support to helping families in need, the added support of community volunteers provides emergency service providers with added resources and increased capacity to help our California communities and nation better prepare for and respond to disasters, emergencies and acts of terrorism.

What are Citizen Corps Councils and what do they do?
State, tribal, and local Citizen Corps Councils bring together a variety of government and non-government agencies and organizations as well as representatives from the private sector, elected officials and community volunteers.
These Councils build on existing community resources to develop a comprehensive strategy to foster a stronger connection between community members and local law enforcement, fire, public safety and emergency management agencies. Councils involve residents of the community in disaster preparedness, training, and volunteer support. Citizen Corps activities are developed to address the specific jurisdiction's hazards, needs, and potential threats. Council responsibilities may include:
- Educating the public on hazard preparedness and mitigation measures;
- Coordinating training in CPR/First Aid and emergency response; and,
- Organizing volunteer activities that support local emergency responders and disaster relief efforts.
