Neighborhood Watch, a program for over 30 years, engages citizen to help protect our local communities. Community residents are actively involved in patrolling their local neighborhoods to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement agencies. As a result of their efforts, residents help prevent crime in their neighborhoods and help serve the police force by working to ensure the well-being of area residents.
Since September 11, 2001, the need for strengthening and securing our communities has become even more critical, and Neighborhood Watch groups have taken on greater importance. In addition to serving in a crime prevention role, Neighborhood Watch programs are also used as the basis for convening residents to focus on disaster preparedness; evacuation drills and exercises; and to organize and participate in group training, such as the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training.
