CaliforniaVolunteers coordinates volunteer activities related to disaster response and recovery, including necessary training, equipment, and transportation provisions. CaliforniaVolunteers works to strengthen the state’s readiness for and ability to respond to large-scale disasters. This site provides important information and tips about how to prepare for a disaster. The site connects people with the appropriate organizations that respond to disasters in California.

As the nation’s premier emergency response organization, the American Red Cross provides information on preparing for all types of disasters at home, school, work and in your community. Additionally, the site provides information on how to become first aid and/or CPR certified and how to volunteer in your community.

The Be Prepared California Web site provides guidelines, tips and checklists on how individuals and families, schools, businesses, people with disabilities and community organizations can be prepared for a public health emergency.

As part of the Governor’s office, OES coordinates overall state agency response to major disasters in support of local government. The OES site offers disaster preparedness information and tips for various populations including families, children, pets, elderly persons and people with disabilities. Additionally, the site contains state emergency bulletins, the state’s threat advisory level and state disaster assistance information.

Citizen Corps, coordinated nationally by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, provides tips and information on keeping your family, home and community safe from threats of crime, terrorism and disasters of all kinds. Additionally, the site provides information on Citizen Corps programs, volunteering, developing community action plans, assessing possible threats and identifying local resources.

This section of the FEMA Web site is designed to teach kids how to be prepared for disasters and prevent disaster damage. The site offers kids an opportunity to learn what causes disasters, what they can do to prepare for a disaster, play games and read stories. Also offered are resources parents and teachers can use in teaching kids about disaster preparedness.
